This study day will consider states of mind associated with pregnancy from a psychoanalytic perspective. It will be of interest to clinicians working with individuals and couples in this area.
Three periods of time will be considered: preconception, pregnancy and the postnatal period. The mother’s state of mind during these time frames will be discussed. Attention will also be given to the role of the father or partner, whether present or absent, and to broader family structures.
The couple’s relationship during this period of change will be central to the study day. Can there be emotional growth and development with the acceptance of a third in their relationship? Does the pregnancy and birth stir Oedipal conflict that cannot be resolved? What effect will early childhood experiences have on the couple relationship at this time?
Key issues include: fertility problems, antenatal depression and attachment to pregnancy, traumatic delivery, perinatal loss and postnatal depression, the effect of the couple relationship on child development and managing sibling rivalry.
Relevant clinical material will be discussed during the day.
