On 6 February 2021, The Times published an article by Anna Maxted titled 'Happy in Lockdown: the eight secrets of successful couples. The therapists quoted are Tavistock Relationships' Joanna Harrison and Dr Elizabeth Kilbey.
In the article Joanna mentions the importance of partners doing small things for each other to make each other feel valued. She also highlights the importance of sharing and appreciating each others' roles and what they bring to the relationship.
Saying 'sorry' in a helpful way is discussed too in relation to a genuine rather than tactical or dismissive approach.
She says "At the moment our relationship is where everything is being dealt with, so it is stacked with pressures", and cites the need for good timing when raising difficult issues, and how the strains of lockdown can affect a couple's physical and emotional relationship.
Her advice emphasises the benefits to both parties of being supportive and taking an interest in how the other is coping, rather than having to have all the knowledge and answers.
